 Let's go dig some history!
MY BEST FIND TO DATE...1851 PIETTA NAVY GUN!!
Found this gun this weekend at a cabin site I have been hunting on and off for about a year now...it was in a tree line and about 7" down...the barrel is 7 1/2" long, and from a quick search on the net, it appears to be an 1851 Pietta, or Colt .36 or .44..it has an octagonal barrel and I can't tell you how stoked I was to unearth this! Any help on ID'ing would be great, I know there are some gun guys out there! As always, thanks for stopping by and taking a look.

I know that a Colts Dragoon has a long octagon barrel like that.

Great find! It's a Colt 1851 Navy barrel. 36 cal. A Pietta navy is a modern copy of a colt made by Pietta.

Very nice. Congrats on a great relic. Will you try to clean it up/restore it?

Yes, I am currently soaking in in olive oil to hopefully loosen some of the muck on it...any ideas on how to best preserve/clean this?

Not yet...I won't have a chance to get back to the property until late Nov. or Dec. because of hunting season..
