Excellent find! Congratulations. Did you find it in that condition...or did you have to clean it up? If you cleaned it, how did you do it? I found one last week and I can't see the date on it. Can you help me?

It came out of the ground at 3-4 inches pretty much clean(a lil dirt)..rinsed in soap and water and i soaked it in oil olive/veg. either one works well...for a day or so and the crud comes right off with little to now effort.

Congrats....Those are pretty rare birds

I've been detecting since 1982 and have found only one (also an 1857) about 3 years ago. I found it in a dry sandy pine woods, and it had very little green on it and still had the copper-nickel color to it. It was worn though so it circulated for awhile before it was lost.

Yours has much better detail....WTG!!!

(I wouldn't hold my breath for an 1856 if I were you. Only 2000-2500 of them were minted and they are considered a pattern rather than a circulation strike.....never say never though, even a broken clock's right twice a day!)

I know what you mean about the 1856..i might end up buying it if i find a 1858 while detecting..I read that very few are found while detecting(any year)..so in itself it was an outstanding find for myself. Also we have found at least 6 IH's out of this spot so i'm thinking if there was one flying eagle...well..there just may be another..thanks for the comments all
Stay safe & HH
