I have managed to find a few Virginia Halfpennies over the years. Virginia and Pennsylvania both claimed the region around Pittsburgh in the 18th century and the dispute wasn't settled until after the Revolutionary War. Both Virginia and Pennsylvania were issuing land grants in the region, sometimes for the same tract of land. For that reason and the fact that the Braddock road led from Virginia to Pittsburgh is why I think I find these coins in SW PA.

Nice finds, Steve and some interesting historic background.
I wouldn't mind one of those passing under my search coil someday!

Thanks Noah. I got a much better reaction when I posted these on a Colonial Relic and Coin Facebook group

Those are terrific finds!! In the 70s I hunted the national highway from below Uniontown, Jumonville, to Wheeling and never found anything like that. Congrats!

Thanks Mudflap. Mine came from Bedford, Somerset, and Westmoreland counties. My buddy got one along the Braddock road just east of the Yough Dam.

Update: Just dug number 6 on 11-26-20. By far the worst looking one yet, but still obviously a Virginia halfpenny.

Even though you are most likely a Penguins fan, I can put the rivalry aside to say that's an amazing find right there. I also never knew about the rift between PA and VA, but I'll read up on that-Thanks!!

Well of coarse I'm a Penguins fan, but a bigger Steeler fan. Here is a good place to learn about the land dispute between Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Those are some super finds, which I'll never find out west here! Congratulations! How many years did it take you to collect that many halfpennies? Thanks so much for sharing with us.

It's been about 25 years since I found my first Virginia halfpenny, which is also my nicest one.
