The brooch is around eleven hundred years old, and was found well inland close to the river Trent .

I suspect this to be a lead test piece. Much rarer than a normal lead disc brooch as it was a one off test that the smithy did to test the mould before using the more expensive bronze or copper-alloy.

Hello Crusader, The museum said it was strange that it was made of lead rather than an alloy. I've had this type before but in a copper alloy.

There will be, one day , what defines history though. I suppose it's different things to different people. If an object is only a hundred years old ,but it teaches us something or gives us pleasure and interest surely that's what counts.
