My best picture of a "special" coin

About a year or so before Marc (Va) found and posted his great 1792 Half Disme, a friend of mine from our local club brought this coin to my house for me to photograph for him and to help him get it appraised and sold.

I think holding this coin was one of my best moments to reflect on how this hobby can be so rewarding in both cash if you so desire and in holding history and increasing your knowledge of our history thru this great hobby.

It is the first time I really felt goosebumps from holding a coin as rare as this one was and then to be the only one to photograph it, except for the auciton house, and then have the photos appear in W&E just topped it off.

So, even though I did not find this one, I sure feel like a part of it and to the man that found it, yes, a find of his lifetime for sure.

My photograph of one of the best coins found by a detectorist in America.

Don

There was super rare coin found at an organized hunt about a year in Bucks County Pa, and I think that coin went for over 36 grand at auction, not sure, but it was a bunch. The coin was a 1694 New England Elephant token and in decent shape!

Don
Thats an awesome find. Do you have a pic of the elephant token too Don? :blob9:

To think that fella got up just like the rest of us that day, ate, got his gear together, then went to the site maybe hoping for seated and found that. One of these days we're going to see someone post one of the major rarities and cash a $50,000 check. Maybe it will be me! ::)

Don,

The listing said the realised price of that Half Disme was $20,000.00.
If I could afford to spend that kind of money on a coin that small and that rare,
I suppose I would...

Congrats.

A friend of mine is a writer and editor whos work has been published in the New Yorker Magazine, as well as many others. In a recent conversation, he told me what I have is a time machine, of sorts. Metal Detectors are portals to the past. I never really thought about it that way before, but it is true.

That's definitely a cool way to view our hobby....whenever we feel like it we give ourselves the opportunity to step back in time. Where else can you go and be the next person in history to touch an object last handled hundreds of years ago?

Incredible coin...a find of a lifetime.

Re: My best picture of a "special" coin

great post don, i got excited just reading your story as i didn't look at the picture first ... to hold a coin this significant would be amazing and to find one .... whew

i also have to say, your pictures are much better than the auction house, their's almost look washed out or something as they don't do the coin justice at all

thanks for posting it

Wow, that is something else. I wonder what seperates a $20K coin from a $1.3M coin, both 1792 half dismes.

Thanks for sharing.
