    Small time I am

I can't say I am a major railroad collector , but I do have a few items . My interest is focused primerly on Nevada . My main interest is cover collecting . A cover is any envlope used to trasmit mail ( I also collect postcards ) . My passion is Nevada history and ghost towns and this led to my interest in cover collecting . DPO stands for discontiued post office and there are many in Nevada over 360 . In my efforts to find DPO's from ghost towns I found there were also dicountied RPO's ( railroad post offices ) . And this led me in to that area of collecting . Here are a few of my items . Hoss

Man! That is some neat timetables and advertising, especially that thermometer! I can't think of many rr's that used thermometers for advertising! Is it origonal? Are most of those rr's narrowgauge? You have a very nice collection there! I hope to get some pics of my collection up soon! Keep it up!

Thanks ncsp . Looking forward to seeing some of your items . Yes the therometer is orginal . No these are standard gauge RR , mostly " short lines " . Nevada had many short lines due the the mining and there are narrow gauge roads , the Carson & Coloardo comes to mind off the top off my head . Of the many short lines 2 would rise above the rest to become all most legendry . The Virginia & Truckee in the north and Tonopah & Tidewater in south . Since I live in Southren Nevada the T&T is my favorite and I have just purchased some nice things . On my days off ( Sun - Mon ) I will try and get some more pics up .Thanks

Do you collect old lead seals that were used to seal baggage cars. Below is an example.

Heres a wrench from the Southern Railway, most likely used on the running gear of steam locomotives.

Here are my five railroad lanterns. Two of these lanterns are old kerosene lanterns, both Southern Railway. I also have an electric Southern Railway lantern from the 40's, as well as an electric Conrail lantern (80's) and a Norfolk Southern electric lantern (90's).

These are eight pencils marked "Southern Railway Co.", probably used by SR workers while filling out orders.

Above are three books: a Southern Railway Conductor Rules and Regulation Guide from 1937, a Southern Railway Timetable from 1910, and a Bible, which belong to a SR employee. The owner toke daily notes on the first few pages, and one of the notes talks about an accident he had while working at a Southern Railway yard, where he got his leg cut off by a diesel locomotive. Pics of the story to come!

And finally here is a rubber flashlight from the 60's I found at the woods near my house. It says "Property of Southern Railway Co."

That's all for now! I'll have some more pics soon, with better detail! Thanks for looking! HH and God Bless!

That's some nice stuff. Did you find it all or acquired by other means?
I really like the lanterns. I find lots of pieces of lanterns a lot when detecting.
Where are you located? The Southern RR went all over the place!

Below is a button my buddy found the other day in Sanford, FL.
Sanford was a huge RR hub in central, FL and was a jumping off point for all points south.
It's from the Orange Belt Railway. This cuff button is from the 1880's.

Nice button! I like the exclamation mark!

To answer your question, I'm smack in the middle of the Southern Railway, in Rowan County in North Carolina. The only thing I found in the pics above is the flashlight. I found it in the woods near my house, not really close to a railroad line (the woods) The house where we live belonged to someone who use to work for the rr (there was a huge steam locomotive repair shop here) But everything else was either bought at antique stores or at an awesome auction I work at! I ahve many other things not pictured that I did find, including some old, rusty switch flags (In a dump, too!), an old Conrail spike hammer (also dump, broken handle), some old Southern boxcar door strips, some small sections of rails (dump), and various air brake pieces, steel pipes, and a complete air hose with connector (uUsed to control flow of air for the brakes through the train. Connect at the couplers) all mared in some way "Southern Railway". Like I said before, I will have some more pics with better detail and some new stuff to show. One of the new things soon to come will be a video of restored Southern Steam Locomotive #630 roaring through here with a Norfolk Southern excursion, the first steam locmotive this towns seen in over 40 years! Can't wait! HH and God Bless!

That's not an exclamation point. It's a Y with a period under it. If you look closely at the Y at the top you will see top of the Y is split to form the fork. I agree it's not very visible and it would be easy to confuse it with an exclamation point.

Yes, I do buy from there... ALOT! I have had lots of luck with eBay before. I'll share some stories later. But first, as I spoke of earlier, the recently restored Southern Railway steam locomotive #630 has been racing through here 3times yesterday and today. It's been pulling excursions for a local railroad museum, which meant an afternoon of chasing! Hopefully I will have more pics in the next few days, but here's one of my best, taken with my phone, trackside. Enjoy and will post more later!
