As going through some old foreign coins my grandpa he gave me years ago and he was a merchant marine so he went to many places including Ireland and so I've been doing some research and the coin I have is is def mint condition and uncirculated and has an amazing mirror background and beautiful toning with lots of blue. Could this be a VIP proof coin? All help is greatly appreciated.

It's definitely an irish penny, but I would say it's just in really good shape for being in circulation.
so a penny could be in circulation and not get one scratch on it it and be completely untouched while being circulated with over coins? That does not make sense. Like I said I have a ten times loop and there is not a ding or mark on it. How do you determine circulated from uncirculated ha I'm a newb and need some knowledge. Cause from the pics online of the proof 1963 coins online the one I have is almost in more pristine condition. But that's just my opinion.

Hi-

My best find ever was last year. it was my dads ten year anniversary, I was detecting right out in Dublin bay. Mud. Hadn't got a signal for ten minutes because I only hunt the top three bars ie silver, under those conditions. only found a concretion, ( bring them home and hit them with a hammer) which is what i look for- and it was one of your coins. !942. The year my dad was born. Wouldn't swap it for the world.

The fact that it may look pristine doesn't matter now. You don't know that the coin may have been handled before your grandfather acquired it.

Pretty much the only way you can find out if it circulated or uncirculated is to send it in to a professional grader, but for this coin, with the chance that it may only be worth $2, I wouldn't recommend it.
