My twisty vine collection
As a nature lover, I have been in the great outdoors all of my life, I rode horseback, swam, fished, hunted, hiked,& enjoyed every aspect of nature, from rock & mineral & fossil & Indian Artifact collecting, to driftwood, odd wooden pieces, hornet nests, giant mushrooms,(dried & hardened), & I make hand crafted hiking & walking sticks from material found in nature.
I started cutting, drying & shellacing twisted vines, & mounting them on a wooden slice, hope you enjoy!!!
These were found in AR, & OK.

They are not Grapevines, I have heard them called (rattan)
But I am not sure what they are, they are green, when growing,
then turn brown after they cure, some are firm enough for walking
sticks.

My wife and I still love the fancy hardwood Hiking Staffs that have the twisting vine impressions that you made for us. We use them when we camp out and everyone always comments on how special and unique they are.

Thanks Jim, Glad you are enjoying them.

Fossi I love these. I do folk art and often in the winter look for similar wood> I paint and design these into snake sculpture

I rarely ever come back from a walk in the countryside
without something from nature, I love all God's creations, & add a little of my own touch sometimes, would like to see some of your creations,

Very unique. You are blessed with a keen eye for the unusual. I could see some of them being used as photo frames with the vines in their natural state as the object of the photos. Kind of like "before" photos with their "after" frames.

Re: My twisty vine collection
You know fossis, with the exception of horseback riding, we have many identical interests. I have met a few other detectorists over the years with these similar interests. When I get my camera going here, I will post some pics of my walking sticks. I use a combination of carving and pyrography. I also cut and polish stones, hunt for lithics, make primitive jewelry and have even tried my hand at knapping. Sometimes I feel like I should just specialize in one thing, but I can't, it is all related.
Thanks for sharing ..............ME in WV

If I had a horse, I would be riding now, I used to do
a lot of it in my younger days.
I enjoy many things in Nature, I can't take a hike without
bringing something home, & you're right about just one
thing, there is too much to enjoy & do.
( I am raising some qourds with six ft handles), & rare
watermelons, (moon & stars), will post pic's after harvest.
here are pic's of some quords my wife painted.
& handcrafted sticks, & canes.

Re: My twisty vine collection
That is some beautiful work there! Do I see some sassafrass? It is my favorite wood to use. I also like maple, although it is harder to work, but has a very even, white surface to work with.
I have always wanted to try doing a little woodburning on gourds.
Fantastic!..................Thanks

Thanks, I use mostly 'sumac" for the canes, they
nearly all have a natural handle, (the main root).
for the hiking sticks I use hickory, persimmon, anything that
is strong enough, one in the pic is "asian bamboo", no
sasafrass this pic, but use it sometime.
Cedar is a beautiful wood, but a lot of time, & effort
to peal.
