it's only about 12 ft, but nobody has been there in about ten years, except to farm the ground around it

Herons build nests like those, but usually higher up.

we do have herons here. but they are the small gray heron. and the nearest water is about a half mile away but that's the river

Could it be a crane, we have cranes some not alot and not all the time out at the lake?

Not sure what built that one but you can bet a family of squirrels live in it now or either a good fat possum.

I didn't see any evidence of nesting materials in it, so I'm thinking it's kind of old.
when I get back there I'll double check
