Down Along the RR tracks & Meadows & Woods

I went down along the tracks & meadows & woods to look around, then later took two Grandsons back to 'Hammer out a Fossil' I found.
I told them they were the first Humans to handle this Petrified wood, (encased in solid stone).
I found several things to photograph on my walk, & cut them a 'Grapevine' to swing on.
(pic of fossil) posted on fossils.

Very cool post Fossis, looks like the boys are enjoying the swing! In the third picture is that a what we call May Apple's in Iowa. When they are out and in bloom here is when we find the Spring Mushroom (Morel).

Thanks Van, yeah that's the 'Mayapple plant', fruit is edible after frost, other parts of it are poisionous.
I need to 'bone up' on my mushrooms.

Cool pics. We got another foot of snow today. We used to smoke grapevine; for what reason I don't know, just the thing to do. Are Chiggers out yet? Pound for pound, the most dangerous animal on earth. If they were as big as a dog, they would eat a man plumb up.

I don't know much about any of the other Mushroom's Fossis, just the Morel. It is the sponge mushroom that appear in the Spring here in Iowa. People around here go crazy over them. They get about 20 to 25 dollars a pound for them around here and a quart strawberry box is generally about a pound in weight.Generally the May apple are in full bloom up here in about the first of May or so and that's when the season is at full speed for the Morel Mushroom.I don't care that much about eating them, but really love hunting them.I dont sell what I find I just give them away.

Fossis............
I came from a family that was pretty poor Fossis, seven kids and my Dad got food for us any way he could. Fried Cat Fish ,eggs and fried Mush were the staples that kept us alive. My Mom also dipped Spring Mushrooms in cracker crumbs and egg batter and fried them for us or we had them with scrambled eggs. They were very good back in those days, but my family today wouldn't eat that stuff .
