My moonflowers don't look like that, Timberwolf . Do yours come back every year(perennials)? Or did you plant them from seed? I want some like yours! We like planting moonflowers because the hawk moths love them and they smell DEVINE --here's some pics. of ours.

Yes, ours come back every year.
They bloom at night and then close up during the heat of the day.

I'm gonna have to get some like yours, Timberwolf. I have to plant seeds every year. Ours bloom late evening and through the night. The moth in the picture is about the size of a hummingbird and they are referred to as "hummingbird moths", "hawk moth" or "sphinx moth". They have HUGE eyes!! These moths lay the larvae(eggs) that turn into those nasty tomato or tobacco worms.

Hah! Of course you have moonflowers Sandcreek, They are one of my absolute favorites of all times. Even when I'm not gardening much I grow these. I read a book called The Moonflower Vine when I was a teenager, and so I grew them after I got married. Have you watched them open? And those moths are neat too, fat as a hummingbird.

Timberwolf, I know your moonflower as a datura, aren't you in Kay county? The Marland Mansion had some growing last fall, but they didn't bloom till Sept. One variety were almost small trees, the large ones were yellowed flowered, and the smaller ones looked like yours. I got some seeds, then found out they are highly poisonous. Some shaman in Africa?, use them as an hallucenogenic I think. Don't trust my memory, but they certainly are beautiful!

Plant them where the fragrance will come in the house if the windows are open, they smell awesome. They do tend to ramble though. Tomatoe worms like them also.

When I saw the title I wondered if that was back in Oklahoma. And it was. They were always real pretty late in the evening when the sun was just down and we had come in from the fields. Thanks for the pics.

we have moon flowers too! we will sit on the back porch at dusk and if you watch them for 10 minutes, you will see them open up! very cool! they will also open on darker overcast days in the daytime!
