Have one that color, coming to my feeders, he's smaller than that one.
Maybe he knows there's some termites in there.
Carpenter ants? Ooo, I hate those guys, they can eat a whole bathroom floor and start on the wall studs.

I think that one is a Hairy Woodpecker, and your smaller one excavator, would be a Downy. I love woodpeckers, but I haven't had one damage a building or tree.

i had one that stayed close to my dogs house
and when he started pecking, my dog went nuts .
