Cooper's Hawk with fresh lunch

When I came home from the store today, I parked in my driveway and was walking around the front of my truck to the gate, when all of a sudden the air above my head exploded in feathers, everywhere. I ducked in time as the hawk landed in the road with his lunch struggling in his talons. He sat there till his quarry quit moving, then he flew up and over to the grassy area to the side. I went and got my camera and took these photo's. I told my wife that after he was done eating, I would go take pics of the remains, well let me tell you.....after he left, a big ol' alley cat came and got the rest. The circle of life completed....NGE

You have witnessed the majesty of a sacred animal. I love it when I see things like that ever feed an Oscar gold fish? That is one heck of a sight. Little gold flakes floating to the bottom of the tank after one swift motion from the jaws of the Oscar.

Amazing birds. I have one that lives nearby and he will often eat his "lunch" on top of my kids' swingset. It's about 20 feet from the house and we have a great view out of a large window. The last time he was busy plucking feathers and eating so I decided to see how close I could get. I slowly walked up to him. He kept his eye on me but wasn't worried in the least. I got up to about 10 feet before he jumped off of the swingset and dove straight into a bush about 10 feet away. A small bird shrieked and took off out of the bush with the hawk in tow. I guess the hawk was going after desert!

They are so agile when chasing prey, it's something to watch. Good pics NGE :icon_thumleft:

I also have video of him eating, but because my tripod wasn't handy it is a bit shakey. I will try to upload it to my youtube page then supply a link in here......NGE

Re: Cooper's Hawk with fresh lunch

What's he got? A dove or pigeon?

Hawks, of all kinds, are magnificant.

Great shots.

Re: Cooper's Hawk with fresh lunch

Hawks are my favorite animal. I see at least two every time I go out. Usually a Redtail. The day after I fell my deer this year I woke up looked out the window and a big ole hawk was making off with the remains of it.......it was funny because he could not get very high up so eventually he just gave up!

Great shot Larry! You were in the right place at the right time.

We have one that circles my feeder occasionally and usually takes a morning dove.
