Now get this. I had never seen his profile page b4. When I got home I uploaded my pics and was going to send TC a PM. So I went to his profile page and (see his pics) Can you say twilight zone!!!
This is not out on any highway, but down a real back county road.

Those aren't bullet holes. There was a Historical Commission plaque attached...
and a close up so the folks can see the verbage...

DSC01096.jpg

and I'm sure you went on around the bend....

This is Port Sullivan Cem. It seems the only reason some of this was cleaned up was because the state posted a historical sign out front fairly recently. They sure let this great old cemetery run down. There were very cool stones scattered out in the weeds and
broken markers. I guess the same damn vandals that removed the plaque from the historical marker defaced a lot of these. What a shame!

This one really caught my eye...

And under the FM485 bridge...Brazos River, running hi, but dropping. Port Sullivan was just up river about .5 miles from here.

We GOT to get some permission to MD where the old town was. There was over 1000 population in Port Sullivan at one time. All back behind where the historical marker was, out in what is now just oak and mesquite.

What a beautiful day in the neighborhood!

Well ill tell ya thats The smith place "white sands" a few yrs ago you could stick a couple bucks in the mailbox and go play, four wheel party, swim in fish in the river , and yes metal detect. Now Its Private but I havent asked to go in yet. i do have a spot down the way weve dug at and made some good finds.

Port Sullivan was a VERY affluent town pre Civil war, now all gone but the digging.
I thought I discovered it when I first started detecting, but it has been hit hard in the past by clubs and individuals, ive heard of some Great stuff coming out of it. Im sure more is still there. Cameron Musem has some of the best unrecorded information on the town.

I live a few miles away.

That's a pic of Burdie and Sniffer couple yrs back, we hunted close the river crossing. (several good sights all along the Brazos river) My oldest coin out of the place is a 1848 1/2 dime. we've found a few Civil wars items there. It was very non Union b-4, during and after the war. You were on "Old river road" a road older Than- and once a part of -Old San Antonio road.

A&M college did a great study on the place some yrs back(70's or 60's), Cant find the link. You were very close to where The white shoal crossing was bravowhiskey. Perhaps another expedition is in the making soon while the grass is down.

You know this is a real problem here in Tx.,with people knocking over gravestones,we just had that happen here in Austin last week and it was in the city at a small graveyard.

I reckon some vandels have moved through there, but alot of its old age and neglect. There was a clean up just last yr, so its looking better.
This cemetary is well over the age of Texas, Sullivan was one of Austins colonies. probaly folks Buried all around it, they just were less afluent and only got a rock or 2 for a Marker back in the the end of thier day. Theres several like it around here but this is probaly the oldest known, in Milam and Robertson county.
