We went for a hike and found that Spring has arrived at California's Mt. Diablo:

Most excellent pics. Those guys are really dangerous when they first come out in spring as they store up venom all winter. But they are kinda sluggish when first coming out. Then there's the arguments about being bitten by a mature experienced rattler versus a young hothead. Yours has probably been out for a while. It's kinda strange he isn't backing up in strike mode, but maybe you've already cowed him down or it's still early and cool and he's just not real active. He's got that tongue out, so he suspects something's there, but doesn't feel threatened by it. Yet. Good pics.
