Thanks tuberale, I thought I had Oklahoma under my avatar. It looks like tuber lyonii will be what I need to research.

That's what I'd search for in your immediate area. In the '30's, a study was done in New Mexico and Arizona at any homesite that had one or more young (less than 10 years old) pecan trees for shade. The study concluded that most of the homesites in that area had Tuber texense present. Tuber texense has now been renamed Tuber lyonii.

Probably late summer would be a good time to check, especially if you have any late thunderstorms then.
