The weather has warmed up a bit where I am just recently and the wild life is enjoying the respite. I went for a walk today, carrying the trusty camera, and saw a flock of Gold finches. The Gold finch is a very timid bird, seemingly, and I spent ages trying to get close enough to take a really sharp photo. This is the best I could manage plus a quick shot of a Heron that surprised the heck out of me, I need to get a better telephoto lens. Don't worry guys, the bad weather is set to return later this week :'(.

Very good picture! Our Gold finch (american) doesn't have the face coloring like the European one does. However, the european one is seen here on occasion, in Oklahoma no less! so I'm always on the lookout for this little guy, thanks for the picture.

Hi naturegirl :hello:, I don't know about the American Goldfinch, but the British one's love Thistle seed. I have a Thistle seed feeder in my back yard, a bit like some of you guys have Humming bird feeders, and they will empty it in a day or so. Next year I will set the camera up to take shots of them feeding.

Yes, the american finches like the thistle seed also, but since it's expensive and I over-indulge my little friends :dontknow:, I feed them black-oil sunflower seed. It's much cheaper, they eat it very well, and I can feed them to my hearts content.

beautiful bird thanx for posting and most of all thanks for feeding them, for we love to take care of the birds here in the winter more because they need our help or they will not survive, i was treated to 8 blue jays yesterday morning all gathered around the bottom of a 30 ft scotch pine tree i have in my yard, they caught me off guard and i am waiting for that picture moment because they will be back as long as i put some seed out there. It's a good pic, and a different kind of gold finch than what I've seen here in the states. Mostly we only have crows, ravens, and magpies here in town during the winter. However when I go up north I spot a lot of hawks and golden and bald eagles. I spot them; they're hard to photograph. Maybe this year I can come up with a white ghillie suit and get closer.
