During the winter months the buffalo(bison) bulls gather in bachelor groups. We were riding around this evening and saw a group of about 20 bulls and they were running and bucking. We stopped and sat in the truck to watch and listen to them.
When they get mad, they make such funny noises. They were grunting, huffing, roaring and snorting! And pawing the ground and then they would urinate on that spot and roll in it. We watched about ten of the bulls pair off and fight.
One sign that a bison is getting aggressive is when they 'ring' their tails---the tail almost stands straight up.
It was quite a show and my daughter took some pics to show everyone.
Check out the one with his tongue sticking out...he was very vocal and roaring when she snapped this pic.
Thanks for looking.

Hi sandcreek, North American Bison are bred over here and you can get bison burgers and sausages in some of the supermarkets. As you probably know, they taste good :laughing7:.

I don't know why these bulls were acting that way :dontknow: ---Their breeding season isn't until July/August. The cows will start calving in late March/early April.
Maybe there was just too much testoterone flowing and they were trying to figure out who was the dominant bull, or maybe this pretty weather we've been having just made them want to spar :laughing7: . It was fun to watch!
Thanks Fossis!!!

Hey sis, great pics! I like the last one, the way that one bull has his head all cocked off is too funny!

Those things were sure posturizing and showing each other their horns. Funny how male animals do that---whitetail bucks do the same thing.
Must be a 'guy thing' :dontknow: ;D ::) .

Now they are some huge animals! I used to laugh at the tourist's in Yellowstone park trying to chase them down to get photos. The Bison would turn on them and like to kill them.

We have that same problem on the Preserve, Mike.....You see people out walking around in the pasture with the bison and we just shake our heads. We've even got huge signs that say "BISON ARE DANGEROUS---KEEP YOUR DISTANCE" but I guess most people can't read :dontknow: :help:  . I hope I never have to witness someone getting chased down by one of these animals, because they can really run fast! And some of those bulls average weight is 2,000 lbs. or more. Can you imagine what kind of hurt one of them could put on a person? It wouldn't be pretty!
Take care and thanks for the comments!
Carmon~~

Thanks for the pictures. Takes me back to when I was a kid and we stopped at a farm in OK on our way to CA. It was somewhere on old 66 here in OK. All I remember is how small I was and How Big they were! Best steak and buggers I've ever eaten.

Yeah they say that the Buffalo's kill/maim more people in Yellowstone than any other animals combined!! They are just doing what buffalo's do! People would never walk up on a grizzly bear like they try to do buffalo's...??? Great pictures!!

That makes me think of those shows on TV called "Animals Gone Wild" and you see some tourist out walking amongst the bison and the next thing you know they're running and screaming and looking for a tree to climb :laughing9: .
I sure wouldn't want to be hit by one of these animals--it would be like getting run over by a freight train!! And the old mama buffalo's are even more aggressive that the bulls especially right after they have their babies.
Thanks Sackett!
