I swear I'm gonna quit smoking. I'm seeing these monsters every night when I go out. One tonight brought him back up muscle, couldn't get a good pic of the second one though. I can't convince my daughter to hold a quarter next to one for a size reference.

wolf spiders while scary looking * are generally not thought of as being very "dangerous" to mankind -- unlike - black widows, brown widows , brown recluses * all of which are big time bad news --wolf spiders are quite fast and are wicked preditors of small imsects --they run them down * thus the term "wolf" spider was used for them--since a wolf pack runs down its prey as well.

Most spiders can bite, some are strong enough to break the skin, there was a case a few years ago where some workers in an efluent plant (sewage works) were attacked by a colony of money spiders and suffered a mild rash. Some spiders have venom some don't, some are necrotic, some are neurotoxin based ie the poison goes after the nerves. The true Wolf spider will bite, but only if really provoked, not sure about the poison tho'. Check this link to the Natural History Museum http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/life/insects-spiders/identification-guides-and-keys/spider-bites/

I don't care if they are poisonus or not. They are big, they are ugly, and they make me nervous. My daughter asked me what happens when they develope an immunity to the bug spray. I told her that until they developed an immunity to my shoe, I wasn't worried about it ;D

There is a wasp called a mud dauber that I have seen pulling one of those massive wolf spiders across the yard. It was way to big to fly back to the nest area and so it was dragging it there. I have seen this several times in the last 10 years. For those who don't know mud daubers stack the stung/paralyzed spiders in a mud tube like nest that they build and then lay an egg in it and seal it up. When the larva forms it has fresh spiders to eat till it becomes a wasp. I have found these in my shop that for some reason didn't hatch and when opened it had 17 spiders in it.

ALL spiders are HIDEOUS creatures and I hate them.

I kid you not, one of those wolf spiders tried to nonchalantly come into the house with the cats, like I wouldn't notice.

They are also extremely hard headed. You can't just throw a jar on the floor for it to get into so you can take it back outside. Nope, they will either go around it or just step over it. :tard:

We also have spiders that are as big and hideous called Fishing spiders. I don't notice them running as fast though. Here's a pic of the fishing spider

Oh man the infamous fishing spider.... a lifetime ago when I was but a wee lad in Donaldsonville Louisiana, My dad and I went fishing on Lake Verrett in our little aluminum john boat. We were hitting the bluegills hard as they were spawning in the cypress knees and cypress trees. I got hung up on one of the trees close to the trunk. Paddled over there and put my hand out to stabilize myself on the tree trunk and the TREE MOVED!!!!!!!
Biggest d*** spider I have ever seen ran around the other side to get out of my way. Scared the crap out of me!! It blended in perfectly with the bark and I didn't see it till it took off which I am infinitely grateful it did, cause if I had put my hand on that thing I may not have made it. It was as big as my hand and made a LOT of noise as it ran around the tree. Bigger than what we call banana spiders, and those are big spiders. Thought I'd share that with you peachy. Thanks for the memories...

I've often thought, spiders that big don't need to be poisonous because they can kill you by scaring you to death.
