This coot was very timid for days, then suddenly, today she came out and showed off , enjoy.

I didn't know a 'coot' was an actual bird. (I thought it was just an old perverted man ).

OWWW!!! Sandcreek, the name of that fowl is where the term " bald as a coot" comes from. It doesn't mean "pervert" it means "bald"

Sorry Colin, I missed your post earlier, I was on another forum. Yes you are right, they can be killers, but this family are the only water fowl to breed on this pond this year, plenty of newts this year though , crested too

We have coots also but in some parts they are called mudhens. I prefer mudhen because that's what they taste like. I was camping in the backwater of the Colorado River many years ago with my brother and friends. We killed some for camp meat and they tasted terrible but, it WAS food. Never noticed that big, white plate on the heads of ours though. Were you at birdforum.com? I've been there.
