Camped at the base of Round Hill last night and got to check it out, as there's a tale of a lot of gold buried there. This is located south of Poncha Springs, at the top of the San Luis Valley in Saguache County. Settlers first came to Poncha Springs in the 1860's, and the guest registry contains a lot of famous names, among them Jesse and Frank James. (!?) I climbed the hill and a thunderstorm came up. It started to hail (less than pea sized, but it covered the ground and stung like crap when it hit my ears) Since it was lightening, I couldn't wait it out under a tree, but beat it back down the hill to camp. The wind switched out of the north and the temp dropped from 75 to 45 in ten minutes, but at least didn't get no colder durin the night. I came home empty handed, but made one cool observation, and I'll put up another post for that.
