Took A Road Trip today
I picked up my buddy Scotto today & we went over to Idabel Ok to the Museum Of The Red river where the Mccurtain Co Gem & Mineral club was having a 'Rock Swap' & Mineral show.
They had lots of colorful minerals, fossils, & displays, we visited & shopped, then toured the museum.
They have Indian Artifacts, pottery from North & South America, carved jade from China, vases, African carvings, wood carvings, one lady 'inlaid beautiful stones on deer & cow sculls', plus made jewelry from 'Indian pottery shards'.
They have a 'cast' of a dinosaur found & excavated by two amateur 'Rock Hounds', Cephis Hall & Sid Love, they dug for around three & a half years to get it out of the ground, then it was cleaned & prepared in South Dakota.
It is an 'Acrocanthosaurus', slightly smaller than a T-Rex, it has been named the State Dinosaur of OK.
We had a great time out visiting with friends & seeing the sights.
Pic of the three men is Cephis on the left, Scotto, & myself.

They endured snakes, mosquitoes, rain & lightning, digging with hand tools, jackhammers, & a backhoe, I don't think I would have that much patience.
The Museum is really a nice addition to the area, it started displaying mostly Artifacts found along the Red River, then included pieces from all over the world.

It sure was a good time.
Lots of world-wide artwork and artifacts in that little museum that are mindblowing. The dinosaur was cool to finally see after hearing about it for years.
Sad to see that there aren't many young people getting interested in rockhounding, guess they'd rather be home watching TV, playing video games or texting.

Yeah, it was a 'good day out', glad you finally got to see it.
It is sad to see the older members dying off, & not many to take their place.

I went down to Idabel about 12 years ago to visit that place and was pretty much blown away. They had drawers and drawers of arrowheads, and overall a collection you probably wouldn't expect in a little place like Idabel. I thought it was better than that museum in Norman. Anybody ever findin themselves within a 100 miles of the place would do well to visit it. I spent over half a day wanderin around in there.
This world is not my home.

It's a shame they can't display more of the artifacts on the walls, you wouldn't have to look in the drawers.
It is 'quite a Museum' for that area, they find lots of Indian pots around the Red River, most of ours farther North were plowed up & broken over the years.

Beautiful place.....nice show.
I'm looking for the crystalized rock, here in S. Korea. Plenty of round rocks, but so far, when broken open, no crystalization.
Just a matter of time before we find some.
For sure, a nice place to visit.
Can't find it if you're watching tv at home, your machine isn't on, and the head of your detector is pointed up!!
