Got one of the grandsons up from Mexico for a couple of weeks so took him on his first campout ever. Lots of snow all over the state but we went down on the Arkansas River east of Salida. Maria came along too. Taught him about the basics of fishin, saw some wildlife, and stayed right with the little rascal climbin the hills. He didn't do too bad for a 10 year old first time out in the wilderness.

Coolest thing, little ten year old never been out in the woods, never been campin, lived in an urban environment all his life, when I went to put the fire out this morning he came over and sang a little prayer song thankin the fire for keepin us warm. Crap, that sort of thing probably hasn't been done in Colorado in over a hundred years! I was very proud, because you don't see that sort of behavior much in the young folks today, as they've forgotten old ways. Probably not two people on here understand that, but I was amazed, and very proud of my grandson.

I enjoy kids who were brought up in the old traditions. You don't see that much these days, and what you are teaching him will stay with him the rest of his life. All that you instill in him of you will be carried on. Good luck. rockhound

Good job teaching him about nature, he will always remember.
I took a Navaho Indian on a hunt for Artifacts a few years ago in Arkansas, & I told him: you are the first Indian in 5 0r 6 thousand years to walk here on these 'ancient campsites'.

Nice pics RGINN :icon_thumleft:, my grandparents, on my fathers side, had a saying, " Thanks for your warmth, thanks for your light, thanks for keeping us safe through the night" regarding their overnight fire. Something that is now lost with gas central heating and such. Thanks for bringing that back to me

Take care mate, and keep posting :icon_thumleft:
