I have a Great spotted woodpecker that wakes me up at sunrise during spring and summer, I hated it at first, now he/she is a friend. I guess I have got more into nature as I got older

They find the resonating sound of you siding or gutter system better than drumming on wood to attract a mate. The better or louder you drum, the finer "chick" you can attract.........NGE

That sounds logical, trying to think what months we have heard the gutter rapping. May have been only in the spring, but think I remembe it also in thru the summer season.

For undug coins this is true. For dug coins this is untrue.
The value will increase with judicious cleaning."

Good shot Don!! I never knew why they do that. One near my parents house was hammering away on a metal road sign.

There was one that hammered on a metal utility pole outside the fire station for hours. But, that was before digital cameras!
