Red Bellied Woodpecker, a real noise maker

I can never catch this guy in the act on film, but at least I got a pic of him today at one of my feeders, I know other people have had the same thing happen and not just in my neighborhood. What's that you ask How about early in the morning hearing an ungodly noise that vibrates thru your house. You at first think , what the heck Then finally you see this bird on your rain gutter downspout hammering away on the Aluminum, why? got me, but one of these days I will get a photo of him doing it or better yet, video............ Anybody else have similar experience?

I have a Great spotted woodpecker that wakes me up at sunrise during spring and summer, I hated it at first, now he/she is a friend. I guess I have got more into nature as I got older

They find the resonating sound of you siding or gutter system better than drumming on wood to attract a mate. The better or louder you drum, the finer "chick" you can attract.........NGE

That sounds logical, trying to think what months we have heard the gutter rapping. May have been only in the spring, but think I remembe it also in thru the summer season.

Good shot Don!! I never knew why they do that. One near my parents house was hammering away on a metal road sign.

There was one that hammered on a metal utility pole outside the fire station for hours. But, that was before digital cameras!
