The Snake Parade !
On my recent Spring fishing trip I was able to veiw one of nature's unsual events . Snakes leaving there den after hibernating all winter . These are Gopher Snakes , Pituophis catenifer or Pituophis melanoleucus. These guys are non venomous and are often called the " Farmers Friend " because they eat large amounts of mice , rats , gopher's and such . They can grow up to 7 feet long and if cornered they will coil and strike at you . The biggest of this bunch was about 5 feet . I saw 6 snakes but the Ranger drove up in his truck and that seemed to scare them and they stopped coming out of thier den . Hoss

Very cool snake pics-must have been quite a thing to see. Mean Ranger! As many times/years as I have been hanging out in the pines, I have only had the privilege of seeing a handful of snakes. There is one area where I have seen the most and three different kinds-rattler, scarlet king and black (rat). I always go back to the area trying to replicate the experience to no avail. It is all part of the treasure hunting adventure isn't it?!
