It's reputed that Blackbeard buried treasure here, and left a wife (his 13th) to guard it. He departed in haste after spotting a British warship...and never returned. Capt. Sam Haley discovered 3 bars of solid silver in the early 1800's, but no sign of the "large quantity of gold and jewels" has ever materialized. Any conjecture???

For those caught up in state of wonder and awe at the prospect, Smuttynose Island is one of 9 islands in the group collectively known as the Isles of Shoals. Capt. John Smith named them after himself when he made the 'discovery' in 1614, but due to the abundance of the mighty Cod, the islands became known as the Isles of Shoals (meaning 'shoals' or 'schools' of fish).
