What kind of turtle is this and what are the bugs?

Found this guy by the creek today, and thought the red in its shell was unusual. Even though its shell was badly cracked, it was still alive, but bugs have moved in for the kill. What kind of bugs are they?

Not sure about the poor turtle, but the bugs are Carrion Beetles. Pretty gross, but some people use those bugs to clean the flesh from animal skulls. Not my thing, but some folks like to display skulls for decor.
