Originally a route used by prehistoric man, later used by prospectors from South Park headin to the Blue Valley gold diggings around Breckenridge, then the Denver, South Park, and Pacific put in a narrow gauge railroad in from Como to Breck. They abandoned it, and after WWII Army Corps of Engineers turned the old railbed into an automobile road. Good road and not a bad pass at only 11,500, but it's closed in winter to cars cause if anyplace in Colorado gets snow combined with wind, this is it. Saw a reconstructed water tank and the section house on top of the pass. Was scouting it for maybe camping but way too many people, and mostly bicyclists. I thought some sort of event was goin on, but I found out this road is one of the top destinations for mountain bikers, and just regular bike riders. They can have it, I'm headin up to the wide open spaces of Middle Park tomorrow.
