Just over the hill behind the ranch house is where General Crook
skirmished with indians on his way to help Custer. He decieded
Custer was on his own and returned to the fort. When I was hunting
the school yard (foreground) a guy came up and asked if I was
going to the battlefield. I told him I would'nt be going there. He told
me "I'm glad you said that" as he pulled out his battlefield park ranger
ID. He told me his great grandfather had ridden with the Fetterman
colume, but had left 2 days prior to the massacre, but returned a few
days later to bury the dead. He also told me the park does'nt own the
entire battlefield and showed me the area they don't own. And the
people that own the ranch house (built in 1898) told me I could hunt
the property if they were present.
