I got a break from the Sotheastern Shrine Convention I'm
attending in Chattanooga and went to the Point Park atop
Lookout Mountain this evening.During the Civil War the Union
held Chattanooga while the Confederates were defending
Lookout Mountain.

Here's a view of what they saw (imagine an 1860's type city):

This second shot shows the view of Moccasin Bend in the
Tennessee River:

The third photo shows Craven House, which is almost at the
foot of the mountain. The union forces advanced up the
mountain and positioned themselves around this home,
which was rebuilt by the Craven family after they were
able to return to their land.

The last photo was taken from a marker that showed what
was left of the home after the Union forces had taken the
mountain. It was looted and burned by the Union troops.
Note that there was very little foilage at the time of the
battle. I have seen a number of old photos and most
of them show that the battle fields were mostly void of
trees and foilage.

Gypsy...are you talking about the Occhs Museum or the Craven House. In either case, the answer is no....ran out of time....Point Park was closing in 15 minutes and by the time I got to Craven House everything was closed up. Went around a gate just to get the photo. I'll have to go back.

Standing on the overlook of Chattanooga...there was a battle on the face of Lookout Mountain, eight miles to the southeast was the Battle of Chicamauga, and about 5 miles to the east was the Battle for Missionary Ridge. All I kept thinking about was how much land around there was ripe for hunting!
