Steve and I again visited HALLOWED GROUND today. The Chickamauga Battle Site.
CH 1.JPG

Inside the visitor's Center is also a special treat. A 34 million dollar gun collection. Mainly rifles and smooth bores of the Civil War.
CH 3.JPG CH 4.JPG CH 6.JPG

At the front door of the visitor's center are the six guns (cannon) used by both sides of the conflict.
CH 7.JPG CH 7a.JPG CH 8.JPG CH 8a.JPG CH 9.JPG CH 9a.JPG

CH 10.JPG CH 10a.JPG CH 11.JPG CH 11a.JPG CH 12.JPG CH 12a.JPG
It would appear that the Napoleon and James' descriptions may be reversed..... sorry

Because of the very large area covered in the battlefield, an automobile tour is best. This is station one of the tour.
CH 13.JPG CH 13a.JPG

Throughout the park you will see very very many of these monuments posted where the actual units were positioned. I am partial to WI units.
DSC00152.JPG DSC00157.JPG DSC00158.JPG

We did a very abbreviated car tour of about a half hour. Suggested tour time is 6 hours.
The three day battle amassed 40,000 casualties. About 4,000 were KIA.

I will be back a few more times to do this sight proper justice. Thanks for the three days of tours and hospitality, Steve and Sue! ╦╦Ç

Neat pics! The West Point foundry in Cold Spring, NY ruins are still accessible. Main office is still standing. They made the area into a preserve. One of my relatives was an archeologist on the site from Michigan Tech. John Ferguson Weir's 1866 painting, The Gun Foundry was on display at the Museum of American Art in new Britain, CT.

As a Louisiana boy I appreciate how they paid homage to the Louisiana Soldiers. Thank you Terry.
Mr.Truth, if your comment is thanking us for the homage, we graciously accept. Further, EVERY unit that fought here, north and south, are honored with their own monument. The National Park Service here has done a tremendously superior job of covering the battle. ╦╦Ç

Digger, I saw many Ohio units depicted on monuments similar to the WI that I photographed. Ohio was WELL represented in this battle! ╦╦Ç

Hehehe. It is so hard to decide which ones to post! I get a little carried away.

I had a Great Great Grandfather who served for Ohio. I haven't even started to try and research his unit and where they went.

Yes Sir! And loving it. Stopped for the night at Whitestown, IN. Just North of Indy. I don't want to get to first stop in WI tonight as I'll be too tired to be sociable. First stop is my good friend Tokameel. Then family..... but don't tell them they are second! ╦╦Ç

Its definitely a site worth visiting, I was there over Spring Break and was impressed with its somber beauty.
If you enjoy visiting CW battlefield sites Vicksburg National Military Park https://www.nps.gov/vick/index.htm is Outstanding as well and well worth the Visit.
