I don't think I would be picking him up....mmmm...Those are rattlers...I think it might be this one..the only one in that area with the larger bands, but not quite that color.

The boot print could have been there from before the snake even got there.

They don't always bite if you get near them. Depends on their mood, and how hot / cold they are. One of my friends surveys and they go by rattlers all the time, one time he looked down and the thing was literally about an inch from where he stepped, it didnt bother him a bit but nonetheless he moved on. Most the time they wont bother you unless you bother them, ie kick or step on them or make threatening moves at them. If it's sunning itself and you startle it now, then it could lash out.

I used to feel that way also, but came to find out that they do a lot of good...Now I just let them be and they let me bee's..lol

I feel the same way. Why kill a rattlesnake that is miles away from any human activity. I have chased rattlers off roads so the next fool that comes along wouldn't kill it.

I don't go out looking for them to kill, they are plenty fine in the woods, in the weeds or whatever, but when I walk outside and the bastard is sitting on my porch... it's dead....

I've heard of a Mojave green rattler, supposedly one of the most deadly varieties of rattler. Here's another page from the site SC hunter linked to. I've also heard that they flouresce green under a blacklight, don't know if it's true or not.

Sorry if I offened, but if I even suspect it to be poisnous, I try to destroy it, I killed a moccasion and a Big copperhead this weekend. wishied a had the camera for the copperhead he would of streched out near 4 ft, Biggest I'v ever seen.
I carry my revolver (22 magnum)when hicking with the first 3 rounds of rat shot and the next 3 hollow points, the rat shot usally stopes em fast and then a nice close shot with the hollow pt to make sure.

Probably one of the more deadly is the Catalina Pygmy Rattler...also climbs trees. The only reason I say its deadly is that it often does not have a rattle for warning.
