Wanted to camp at O'Haver Lake but campground full, about a third of the sites 'reserved' but not occupied, so went on down to Pentitente Canyon, but decided to head on over to La Ventana del Norte. Got my days off changed so now I got the same days as the wife and took her along. Great place to camp as it's not as impacted by tourists and there ain't much there but rattlesnakes, bears, and lots and lots of cactus. No country for tennis shoes if you go. In 24 hours only 4 vehicles came by, I guess on their way to look at the Ventana. (OK, the sign says 'Natural Arch', but all the Hispanics and even me recognize it as a 'window'.

Am I correct in assuming this is in the San Luis Valley?
Yep, southwest of Saguache and on west of La Garita. Northwestern part of the valley. Check that area out. It has a little less traffic than the east side where the sand dunes are.

I've never been back in there. I've have some luck finding artifacts in those juniper and pinon forests. As they are today, I'm sure it was back then excellent country to ambush deer and other small game along with gathering pine nuts.
