On my suet feeder this morning. The feeder is nothing more than a small limby dead pine tree...I snipped off the branches and left them a little long for perches, and drilled 1" diameter holes for suet feed...I put it in the ground like a fence post..It'll probably rot off by next year, but I have another one in the shed to replace it.

Cool idea. That pesky squirrel likes it too.
Mike
Thanks Mike, You're right about the squirrels. This picture is the first one of I made. I used a 1.5" bit to make the holes...I think they were too big. 1" I use now seems about right..I've learned now to mix hot pepper sauce in the home made suet. The squirrels leave it alone...It affects mammals but not birds.

Awesome pic! That's a nice covey of California quail. I didn't know they perched in trees. I used to see countless numbers of those little guys in Borrego & Baja. They were always dust bathing on the ground or eating rocks off the side of the road ..Lol.
Thanks for sharing.. brought back some good memories :icon_thumleft:

I see quails on the mine road I go to in Yerington Nevada. No pictures of them yet as they're always running away.

No, This picture was taken in my yard in North Central Idaho......The species is " California Quail ". From research I've done, they were introduced to Idaho in 1900.

A good friend has a book on quail.

I remembered Gambles Quail, and Scaled Quail, but there are a few others.

This link has pictures of the males and females of some of them.
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/California_Quail/id

But there are more varieties on top of those,.....

I can't remember which quail they have in Mexico.

Back in the day guys would go down there for a weekend during season.
