I went through Leadville on a cold winter day yesterday. You can see there on the right one of my old haunts. The Manhattan Bar AKA, The Hat. I drank my first of many quarter draws the day I arrived there in Feb. 1977.
Beautiful! I love Leadville.. Stayed in the old Hotel there and did some bottle digging with a couple of fellows years ago.
That old Leadville dump was a bottle bonanza. Though I never went to dig there I did see some of the collections others obtained. I once lived there at the Delaware Hotel and I spent the night there maybe three years ago.
I love the bars up there. Such colorful people!!! The hat is one of my favorite bars of all time and I've spent many late evenings there when I lived there in the 90s. I think they still have their thirst aid sign. I was at bottle show up there and was at the dump with lots of other diggers. One story came up that their had been 13 gold coins had been found over the years at the dump. It is a huge dump. I guess it's private now. I found quite a few bottles when I lived there and sure wish I had been into metal detecting. I may move back someday. This guy at the dump had a huge shaker box and would load a huge scoop of dirt. Turn on the shaker and would look through what was left. I want to make one for our town dump!!!
The mountains have rules. They are harsh rules, but they are there, and if you keep to them you are safe. A mountain is not like humanity. A mountain is sincere. The weapons to conquer it exists inside you, inside your soul.
Saint Patrick day was always a good time in ole Leadville at 10,200.
Yeah St Pat's in Leadville was a good reason to party, but the celebration was even better at Dooley's Bar in Salida with lots of beer and all the Corn Beef and Cabbage you could eat. Long gone is Dooley's these days and all the miners and cowboy's that would frequent that place 40 plus years ago.
