On May the 9th 1864 Union troops crossed into Virginia from West Virginia for the purpose of destroying the Virginia Tennessee Railroad and Dublin Depot.
The battle was fought at the foot of Cloyd Mountain and over 10,000 Union and Confiderate troops were engaged. Over 2,500 of these toops fell killed or wounded after the 5 hr battle.
As the Confiderate troop fled back toward Dublin Depot, hotly persued by the Yanks, the 5th Kentucky Cavalry, with 400 men arrived via train at Dublin Depot. The were dispatched one mile north of Dublin and ordered to cover the Confederate retreat.
Captain Christopher S. Cleburne, brother of Confederate Maj. Gen. Patrick R. Cleburne, fought with the Kentucky troops. He attempted to lead a counter-charge but fell wounded mortally. In his dying breath he requested that he be buried where he fell.
His request was honored and he now lies at rest in the beautiful New River Valley of Virginia
The old Giles-Dublin Turnpike is now known as US Rt 100 or Cleburn Turnpike.
