Battles of 'Backbone Mountain'

On this little 'ridge', two battles took place during the Civil war.
On Sept 1 1863, the Confederates attacked a Union force, but after a three hour battle, were driven off.
Then again in July 1864, the Choctaws (Confederates) attacked a Federal force & won.
The site is in OK, just SE of Ft. Smith AR
I have talked to folks that have found 'Artifacts' there years ago.

I've heard of these battles, fossis. Great looking marker. Thanks for posting.

DM

The state has erected these new granite markers all over
the state, replacing the old rusty metal ones.

You're Welcome, Fossis.............

It's located on private land, I guess if you knew someone in the family, it might be possible.
I have heard of lots of things being found a long time ago.

LOL, I need to check if it can be hunted.
I know of another place, a guy said he grew up there, & they were always finding 'bowie knives', 'bullets', & 'cannonballs'.
We tried to get permission, but were denied entry. :'(

Fossis,

Another cool place that you have found. Thanks ;D

Have you ever been to the Battle of Honey Springs?
I worked for the Oklahoma Historical Society, on a dig there a few years back.
We found some pretty cool artifacts.

I didn't get to keep any though...Darn it :D

I wonder what the black object is, to the right of the marker? At first glance I thought it was a feather, then a chunk of tire, now it looks like a shred of drainage pipe. Not important, just one of those things that make one curious.

Stone markers are the best. Many cast aluminum markers were stolen for scrap, now WV has started placing bronze markers, as if bronze has no value to scrap thieves. ???

I didn't notice it, but my guess is a 'piece of tire'.
OK has replaced most of it's metal markers with 'Granite', & yeah, those bronze probably won't last for long.
