Honestly, it is Mr WD’s calling/ministry/mission. I am there as his support. He almost quit a couple of times, then one of the vets will “happen” to say something that moves him and he commits again. Thanks guys, glad you all got a kick out of it.. Now I'm not gonna lie, it was mighty tough for that ol 345 to pull that bass out of the water, took me about an hour to wear him down enough to do it.. But that feat made me somewhat of a legend at that plant.. The funnist part of the whole story is that a few months later, after we had finished that job and moved on to another in that plant, is I was moving wooden saw horses out of my way with the bucket, when a Pipe Fitter walked by, stopped and said ""That's pretty good, but you'll never be as good as that guy that caught that fish in the fire water pond"" LOL

Too cold here for me to fish, so it's that time of year I build or refinish fishing rods. My latest project is a Heddon Deluxe President Model # 50 8 1/2' bamboo flyrod. This version of this model was made from 1948 to 1954.

It has Nickel Silver blackened ferrules and a walnut reelseat with Nickel Silver fittings. The Model # 50 was one of their higher-end rods at the time.











Removing the old varnish now. Can't wait to see how this one turns out!

Because of the size and you referring to it as a “baby,” I had to look it up. I found this quite interesting:


Native Americans in the South, and Caribbean peoples used the alligator gar's ganoid scales for arrow heads, breastplates and as shielding to cover plows. Early settlers tanned the skins to make a strong, durable leather to cover their wooden plows, and make purses and various other items. Gar oil was also used by the people of Arkansas as a repellent for buffalo gnats.[23]

Does restoration add to the value or does it matter?

WD, IMO it adds to the value, but it's important to use the same color thread to match exactly how it appeared years ago. I always replace the snake guides because the original guides are usually worn or corroded. The largest guide is called the stripper guide and I will reuse them if possible. When it's finished, it's ready to fish with again. I've seen this rod sell for over $500 after refinishing.

Caught this bad boy in 1900 feet of water on the bottom in the Florida straights/gulf stream. Its called a pomfrette !! They are a pretty rare Deepwater delicacy !! Not many people fish on the bottom out this deep so its rarely seen except by us guys who drop during the day for swordfish!! Missed my swordfish today, but bagged another rare beast !! Wooo hooo !!

Braided fat less drag in the current plus twice as much line on the spool. There is so much current in the gulf stream I actually had 800 meters out to touch bottom briefly.
