    The mountains of california

    Hi
I live in california in the mountains about 3500 ele. I have only been here a year but I love it! I have come across many old mining caves most of them closed and packed tight with rock. I love going Gem collecting as there are all sorts of Quartz in this area and a few others which dont interest me but some I dont know the name of yet and that's why I'm here. I recently found out there is a type of "green" rock that I seemed interested in but found out it has asbestos in it, so out it went.
I have only found a few quartz rock that have distinquished crystals showing.
I have alot of pretty ones that if I had a tumbler They would shine.!!

Hard to tell from the photo what it is, serpentine perhaps. Copper ore maybe? Are you near Mariposa? Mariposite is found in that area. I wouldn't worry too much about asbestos is rock form. It's a danger when its airborne in dust form and you inhale it.

    Welcome to T-Net btw.

Chemically, serpentine (soapstone), jade and asbestos are the same thing. In CA near any major fault line you should be finding lost of serpentine. The good news is you'll find them all together, and it looks like you may already have found them!

    Hi Bellalips420,

Welcome aboard from a fellow new member. I think I am about 1850 Ft. elev. funny same elevation as the time of the California gold rush, maybe I should go and check whats at the 2011 elevation... lol, just kiddin. Good huntin and never mind that stuff about the green rocks being bad for you just don't grind em up or put em in your mouth and I am sure you don't plan on doing that.
    Will work for gold dust.
