Hi newbie hear from South Carolina. My question is do you need a permit etc to go panning on public grounds ( national forest etc) thanks for any input.

Good day fellow diggers, My name is Jay, I've been chasing history for a while now. I am out of Charleston SC so if there are any locals out there wanting to hit the beach or the woods feel free to give me a shout and we'll work the details. I am very interested in meeting fellow SC diggers, I spend a great deal of time on Goog earth hunting prospective land. thats it for now, Happy hunting!

Hey Jj, I think your okay to hunt the National forests so long as you are not on park or historic land. You can chase gold on 'm I believe and even set a claim as are your rights the way I understand it, but as many others have discovered we really do have a serious problem with our mining rights, seems like the second you lay a claim nowadays the forestry service is out looking for a way to shut you down so you really have to do your homework on the "ins and outs" of forest land...and you can't hunt anything deemed historic due to antiquities laws. I don't think you need any panning permit for Forest lands, especially if you practice a"leave no trace" mentality, but change the natural flow of a natural stream and you might have some drama. Hope this helps you some, I do not profess to be a specialist in this area

Hello there,

My name is Timm and I've always loved the idea of becoming a treasure hunter. It began as a romanticized version of Indiana Jones and has moved into something that I am actively planning on making a reality. I have a passion for travel and discovery. I am also a sailor having sailed tallships in the Atlantic, warships in the Pacific, and moving onto my next challenge which is submarines.

I am interested in large projects and expeditions and learning the ropes. I am hoping to find a mentor and meet a lot of new similarly minded people. Please feel free to send an email or chat. Have a great one!

Hi everyone,
A few years ago I moved to an area rich in gold and became interested in gold prospecting as a hobby. I found this forum shorty after and I've been enjoying all of your useful and insightful posts since. I'm joining in hopes of learning more, meeting people in my area and maybe even finding a few new prosperous places to dig!

Hello! I am from New England and just bought an old home in rural RI in a very historic area. We have found a couple of old dump sites and started retrieving old bottles and I kind of fell into a new hobby! Having fun + interested in learning more about my homestead treasures! My brother-in-law has a metal detector + hoping to tag-team the deep woods to see what it has to offer~ Thanks for hosting this cool forum :-)

Hello all! I am a newbie to the forum from Western NC. I have hunted for a scazillion years but went without a decent detector for quite a while. I had an old Whites coinmaster from back in the day. I finally sold some odds and ends of crap I had around and bought a Garretts AT Pro. Just learning about this detector, but so far I am impressed! I like to hunt for coins, jewelry, whatever I can find and hope to do some relic hunting here in Western NC. I hope to find some good leads on places to hunt. I have only lived in NC for 6 years and haven't had the chance to research a lot...yet! I also do fossil/shark tooth hunting in SC---loving the tooth! So I hope to read tons of posts as time permits...there is that work thing to pay for life as we know it! Hope to see you guys out there, and in here!

I don't know if I am posting in the right place. I am brand new to this site, today! I am from Manitoba, and can hardly wait to read through this site and see if there are more people on here from my area. My grandson (age 13) and I have been out into rivers and fields for a couple of years, and have found some interesting things. He comes up my way in the summers. Would love to have some enablers in my life!
