Retired Army guy here and now 1 year away from retiring again from the teaching profession. Got a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV for my wife this past Christmas and have not been on our first hunt YET. I've been reading and researching the detecting field and find myself very excited about changing my status from Newbie to Experienced with those willing to teach us.

Hi there! You're in a good place for sure, both this website and over in that area. A friend who grew up and still lives there clued me in to a place that might be worth your time. If you'd like details, send me a PM and I'll give you a shout with the name of the place and where / why taking a detector there might be good. You might have to look it up on Google Maps to understand and give yourself some practice. Basically I've learned that half the fun of this is learning Texas history and just getting out doors. Happy hunting!

Welcome Aboard! Take a look at Sub-Forums: Texas for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your state.

Tell me about your Garrett 250. I bought my wife a bounty hunter tracker IV and tested it. Has two knobs and a switch with 3 positions. I listened to the sounds and tried to learn how to discriminate, but was a bit unclear to me. I really want a MD that is more user friendly and accurate, that I can see depth of targets and easily determine its identity. Please help!

Thanks, trying to do my homework and research before I go out. Being a retired military guy, I want to be prepared and not look stupid when I do go out. lol

Greetings, Paul, and welcome to the site, from a former SKEETER. I grew up there and know a few things about the history also. In Hopkins County now, about 60 miles away, You may PM me if I can help.

I've not used the 250, but the 150 which is very similar without the pinpoint and the AT Pro who his two steps above the 250. The 150 is very easy to use. You can set for all metal, jewelry and then coins. Setting to jewelry it also finds coins and it was very good at it. Very rarely did it ever register a bottle cap as a coin, I actually find way more bottle caps with my at pro, but mostly because I like to dig most everything. When you find something good the tone is clean and loud and obvious. The 150/250 does also show depth, but it's mostly a guesstimate.

I think the Ace series are very good starter machines, and really a great way to get in and start finding stuff in just a few minutes.

Eventually when you want more info on the target and want to upgrade that is a whole new discussion of where to go next. : )
