Hello folks. Got a metal detector for my birthday last month, fell in love with the hobby. I'm on my third upgrade in three weeks!

Just got a Vanquish 440 today. It seems nice, but my Discovery 1100 and 2200 seem easier to use and less finicky. I know the Vanquish is a great machine, so that brings me here, to learn what I'm doing wrong.

Looking forward to soaking up some knowledge.

Welcome from San Jose, CA! At the end of the day, your MD is what you make it. If you learn the tones and VDI's, I don't care if you spent $200 or $2000, you'll be happy. Happy hunting and good luck!

Welcome from Michigan! Create a test garden of coins and trash so you can learn your new machine. Be patient, there's plenty of treasure out there for you to find!

Just as SD51 says, create a test garden - the soil will then be a slight factor in seeking good targets - but remember to learn that bottle caps and pull tabs sound just as good, so give yourself AND your machine a break, be happy for the trash targets, because that means your good stuff, isn't that far away - just swing go over it, and dig..!

Welcome to the obsession. It took me years before it became a hobby. When I started, if I wasn't sleeping, eating, or working, I was detecting. My first upgrade came after 60 days, and then again 6 month later. I hunted my 1st 6 months without a pin pointer, but won't hunt without one now. My 1st machine was very basic so I made a list of what upgrades I wanted and then bought a machine that had all of them. My 2nd upgrade I found a deal on a top end machine and pulled the trigger from a guy who had to leave the hobby due to health concerns. Many people like the Minelabs and they are good machines, but I prefer a target ID scale of 1-99 over the minelabe 1-44.

Good Luck and Happy hunting

...And, since you're shopping, be sure to get a machine that claims "Weather-Resistant", or better yet - "Water-proof"...!
I can see you will need that, seeing the latitude you live and play in...!
