I bet there are lots of new members getting things as holiday gifts.

I saw a Bounty Hunter at Costco, but started reading an decided on the Vanquish 540 Pro with the Pro-Find 20, as well as a Diamond Digger. Should be enough to get me started.

Do people still hunt with snow on the ground? Anyone want to take a fledgling under their wings? Been reading lots here, and I can't really fathom all the knowledge gained so far.

Thanks,
Brian

Welcome Brian! I'm in lower New York, and when the ground freezes I head into deeper woods and rake out 10'x10' squares in areas I've researched. Usually the leaves insulate the soil (depending on a floor cover minimum of say, 6"). Really experiment with your different modes and learn to "Notch" your discrimination. Cheers!:icon_thumright:

Welcome from Mi. X!

You can detect till ground freezes.
When sod is dormant and we have this seesaw weather freezing thawing it's not best for sod areas..

You can set up a "test" garden. Then expand out as you learn your machine. Due to fresh age of objects in your test garden (or even a rug with objects taped to the back) your signals in soil can be different. But close enough for practice.

Winter is a good time for research. History. Insight into sites!
Start writing down potential sites that suit your interest. Secure permission if on private land.

Practice your recovery techniques. Leaving not only no sign of where you made a recovery. But of it staying that way. Best to do that from the start..

Welcome to TreasureNet Brian. Good thing about learning to metal detect is that it’s just one step at a time. In almost no time at all, you’ll be pulling history out of the ground and freeing those finds up to come back into the light.
Best of luck out there!
