    Howdy Pete,

Sorry I can't help you but don't give up. I moved to New Mexico from California. It took me about 4 months to find a detecting buddy here in Rio Rancho, (Albuquerque). I posted my search for a buddy under, "general discussion" link. Good luck.

Re: Looking for MD'ing buddy near Las Cruces

I heard an amazing story yesterday about a big nugget find close to El Paso.
My buddy sells cons through GPAA magazine classified ads. He lives in AZ now
and was pretty sick when he got a call from a man in Arkansas. The guy said
he was detecting in a dry creekbed that fed into the Rio Grande and dug a
huge gold nugget with a small amount of quartz attached. He claimed it
weighed 22 oz. My reaction was no way. My friend gave me a phone # to
call and this morning I called but the # was no good. I called my friend back
to tell him and he said he could barely hear the man calling and wrote what
    he thought the guy said.
The finder was looking to sell his find and asking spot + premium. If legit
it would make a good investment. Since then I have been trying to imagine
how a nugget that size wound up there. Of course the Spanish road to Santa
Fe is close enough to imagine a scenario where it might be possible but not
likely. I hope the guy calls my buddy again and I can get his correct #.

Re: Looking for MD'ing buddy near Las Cruces

    Hi Lastleg,
I can believe it. I have treasure hunted the Las Cruces-El Paso area for 30 years. More than likely he found it near Anthony Gap. A long time treasure story about a group returning from the California gold fields in the 1850's which was carrying raw nuggets was ambused near Anthony, NM. I know the general area where the ambush occurred and have been looking/detecting for it for a long time now. This is now the second find in this area!
See if you can get more info on this find! There is a lot more where that one came from!

That's great news. I will pass this along to my friend who recently moved
to Meadview, AZ. Before that he was living near Bella Vista, ARK and sold
detectors in that area. The phone prefix given was 479 which covers the NW quadrant of Arkansas.
Were the ambushers native Americans, Mexicans or Anglos. If you can give
the source of this legend more details might be fleshed out. It must have been
a scene of pandemonium for such scattering to occur.
California gold usually was in the +80K range so 22 troy oz could be estimated in the $30,000 range with the premium nugget value attached.
Motherlode specimen nuggets can be assayed to provide the region or in
some cases the actual mine site. This would be handy information should the
    finder wish to sell.

Re: Looking for MD'ing buddy near Las Cruces

    Lastleg:
The ambush was by Commanche Indians. These 49er's were heading back home to the East when they got ambushed. The Commanche didn't want their gold...just the horses and mules that were pulling the wagons. This was a group of 49er's who had just left the protection of Fort Fillmore and were headed for Hueco Tanks ( The next water and safety). I don't want to say too much
about this story or I could start a regular stampede of Treasure Hunters to the area! I have done considerable research on this site. I grew up in Las Cruces and lived in El Paso for 30+ years
so it could be said that I know the area very well. These 49er's had done real well in the streams of California ( Yes, I even know where they got it and how much!) I will try to call this fellow
and see if I can buy the nugget and get more info from him.
Just to let you know about the 2nd incident....a woman wandering in the area ( sorry, I don't want to say where) looking at rocks one day found several (pure yellow) gold nuggets and sold them in El Paso at (sorry, I won't disclose this) a pawn shop! She goes back to this area after every rain storm to get more! She does this because for (some odd reason) she always finds more after a rain! ( She does not know that I have followed her !!! ) Well, I wonder where these pure yellow gold nuggets are coming from?
I strongly suspect a very rotten leather saddle bag is the culprit ... just SLOWLY spilling it's yellow contents.
