East of Socorro and the Rio Grande south of Cerros de Amado - fossil weirdness

It's difficult to get to, but the washes south of Cerros de Amado located center of the topo have a lot of fossils that almost appear to be electroplated. They come in a lot of sizes and are coated with a silver-like surface, evidently from leachates.

It's BLM and I don't know what their policies are concerning carrying fossils off the land they control.

To get there you go east past Escondido Lake, turn south and follow the signs SCENIC SOMETHINGOROTHER ... then start consulting your GPS and Topo to find where to take the two-track south. Bad roads, some tough hiking, but worth it.

Probably not, but unless they've increased the number of personnel it mightn't matter. On that entire spiderweb of roads and two-tracks east of the Rio Grande from Escondido southward [and northward] south to San Antonio I never saw a BLM vehicle.... nor much of any other kind during maybe a hundred trips in two-three years. But that was the 1990s.
