Question...I know that the state requires a permit to metal detect in State Parks, I have obtained these before. What about just vacant State Land? Can I detect on open State Land and State Forests? Or DEC marked State Hiking Trails? I'm talking like the same land people deer hunt on or fish near and what not.

I would suggest checking with the Authority that has control of that particular property. I know that in NJ, Fish and Game lands rely on a statute that prohibits "disturbing any plant, soil or rock." The local F&G office was a bit abrupt when I tried to discuss what was meant by disturb. The clerk told me that I could use a metal detector, but I couldn't dig.

State parks and various other agencies are allowed to issue permits for their areas of responsibility.

Good Luck!

If no laws against it are on the books, I would just do it. If you check, most likely you will get a NO, even if its legal. I detect state land and so far have had no problems.
