I am interested in buying a Simplex for freshwater underwater detecting in a snorkeling situation (inland lakes). This means my head is in the water. Can you detect like this without headphones? I realize there is a vibrate which is helpful, but can you hear the tone under water if you are under water? Do the sounds transmit thru the water?

Yes you can. There is a guy on youtube who detects underwater. Here is a link to one of his videos.

Thanks MTS. In my exerience swimming im thinking there should be some noise I can hear if head and detector are submersed. What sound wont do is transfer very well from one medium to another.
