How do you find stuff so fast?! I went sifting today and found like 5 pottery shards in 2 hours. I almost never find points. I'll show you the spot I picked, tell me what you think please, thanks

Just an Idea... pot chards are light and are often surface finds. Try walking that upstream. You may find more concentration.also with as low and clear as that water is I would probably thoroughly walk hunt first covering a lot of ground can give you a good Idea of where to concentrate and eventually sift.

Honestly I do a lot of research on land to find places to look...soil make up, elevation natural water sources...then I drive out and just start walking..today I went in a field, it has tobacco planted. They only plant tobacco in sandy soils walked around the edge of the crops and found them! A river is about 1/4 mile away

That is exactly what I do. Tell me what you think, if they camped above the flood line, wouldn't you think most of their tools, hard stone stuff would be there, and most of the projectile points in the water. Just seems like most food shots would have been made while that animal was occupied drinking. However, I can't find jack in a creek. Do you find many spades, and agricultural tools in your fields? I sure do .

I agree, I have NEVER found any large tool items! I don't know why either it is extremely frustrating! I know they have to be in my spots...I have found 2 grinding bowls and numerous hammerstones. My number one item is a full groove axe, I want one soooo freakn bad! I've never had luck finding items in water all my stuff is within 100 yards to 1/2 mile from rivers or creeks.

I finally found a grooved axe . That was my #1 for the longest time. I have 3 or 4 grinding bowls. One with mano and medate . I have found lots of spades and adze bits in tobacco fields. That tells me, the land that is used for agriculture , has been for a long time.

Oh yes for sure.. I don't know what part of NC you are from I think I rem you saying north western part. The Tuscarora's lived in these parts and claimed all the land in nash, wilson counties, and they were huge agriculturalist..that's why I'm super suprised I don't find as many tools as I think I should

Hey guys... I really don't know much about walking fields but do you think the crop might make a difference ....as in how much soil is turned over. Since the larger heavier items may be deeper. especially in sandy soil.

I suppose it would. Tobacco, is normally planted in sandy type dirt and it is plowed deep so that the crop will sit in a deep mound of dirt. The sand is easily eroded away from the root if too hard of a rain comes early. After the tobacco slips start growing, the roots kind of push stones out of the hill in which the plant is in. After each rain, the newly exposed stones are cleaned, and then you have it or you don't. Corn and soy beans are about the only other crops around me. They are too thick to walk through. I walk steep red clay banks more than any thing. Erosion will bring it up!

I can't find points for any thing! Look at all the spades , hoes and hawks I have found! Hammer stones only come in if they are polished or unique.

Just a few agriculture tools.

Wow.. it looks like you are in their field. Mabey there was too much activity there for the hunting to be any good. Mabey try to figure out where they would have made camp,hunted,ect.. might be associated with a nearby water source.

That is every field around here. Stone age farm equipment. That is why I think these fields are farmed, they were already clear, and it still carries on. You won't believe me, but railroad tracks here produce nice finds.

You should invite Birdpointgriswald. He might hook you up with a spot in his area.. it looks like he's tripping over points where he is but finds no tools.

I know! I even thought about that. I tend to study the tools more than most , so they stand out to me! They aren't pretty, for the most part they are altered rough and quick. I did find a nice abrader today. But most of the tools I find most would not keep.
