Johnny Cash how he became the man in black from hunting arrowheads

On a lighter note. A little history of a local legend who loved to hunt artifacts in Tennessee.
Johnny cash had a great love of taking time off and hunting creeks and fields. He took his children often and taught them to look for them. Some of my points that mean the most to me were found When I was a child where Johnny Cash hunted. Its all under water now by TVA. Here is an intersting link about Nick-a-jack cave site. I have caved it as an adult and as a child found arrowheads at its entrance. If interested in Johnny Cash and his love of artifacts see this link. He became the man in Black after this ordeal in the cave he hunted. Kind of a long read (link but very good) but comes back around to the cave again in the end. I was going to edit it but thought it is what it is.

    Artist Johnny Cash
Album(s) From Sea to Shining Sea (Track 9)

    The Flint Arrowhead Lyrics

While traveling this land from border to border and from sea to sea
There have a few occasions to leave the beaten path and to find the place
And quiet that's good for thought and just walking through a trackless forest
Or exploring ruins of the earliest settlers or walking along a creekbed
Hoping to find a relic such as a tomahawk an axe
Or even an arrowhead left by a race of long since vanished Indians
There's a great thrill and it's a wonderful feeling to find a flint arrowhead
    [ ac.guitar ]
Over fields of new turned sod and in communion with my God I walked alone
In a furrow bed I found an arrowhead chiseled from stone
I don't know how long ago some redman drew his bow on its last fight
Or did he drop it here afraid white men were near to attack at night
I do know this one thing beyond all questioning it was made to kill
And proof of a master trade is in this arrowhead he made fashioned with skill
That I inherited this ground is denied by this stone I've found but when and by who
Come join me in my tracks then let's stop and look back to the vale and through
In love and peace we'll see the shadows and the trees and voices too
But quietly slowly tread this home of the forgotten dead whose bones are dust
I'm proud that their craftsmen's skill survives the ages still left in my trust

    Hope you enjoyed

That's pretty cool stuff, TnMtns! I didn't know that about Johnny Cash. I'll have to see if I can listen to this song on Rhapsody. My favorite songs of his are "Flesh and Blood" and "Don't Take Your Guns To Town".
Beautiful picture you posted as well--did ya find lots in that field?

I did not know that about Johnny either. He was born about 5 miles north of where I live and then his family moved to Dyess, Arkansas. A timber company used to own his families old home place "The Cash place" and I have hunted and found points all over it. It's close to the river. But alas all good things come to an end and it's all leased now. I have probably 15 or 20 points and several nutting stones that came from his birthplace...d2

Cool story. The Flint Arrowhead is a recitation piece and I first heard it on a 4-track tape (Yes, 4, not 8-track) back in...a long time ago. I kind of liked it then, but haven't heard it since. Thanks for the words.

TN.... thank you for this post. I have always been a Johnny Cash fan and thought that I knew everything about him. I had no clue about this side of him. What a great post you have given us. Thanks again.

You are welcome guys. I thought it was kinda diffrent and thought it might be fun to know their are others almost as famous as us with our passion. I bet he would have got a kick out of this forum in his day Jimmy Carter was a big collector as well.
