I got off work at 5:30 am Monday morning and headed out for a hunt. It was so foggy you couldn't see 15 feet in front of the vehicle, but I only had about a mile and a half to drive from work to get to the field I wanted to hunt. I'd been keeping an eye on this spot because they just taken the hay out of it and turned it and put soybeans in so I knew I only had about a 2 week window before the beans would be to thick to hunt it. We had a ton of rain on Friday and Saturday, but I had to wait until Monday because there a lake in the middle of the field from the runoff that blocked my path to the best ridge.
This field is a very sandy spot and usually produces some fine artifacts, but they hadn't turned it very deep so I figured I wouldn't do very well and I didn't. I didn't do bad, but I didn't find any good points at all, just a few decent Scrapers and tools. This spot has produced some very fine Bifurcate Points in the past and it almost did again Monday. I found two bases of what would have killer little Bifurcates. I did manage to find two Thumbscrapers, one really large Scraper, and a nice little Spokeshave so it wasn't a complete bust.
The thick fog I mentioned earlier got me a nice little scare about an hour into the hunt with a run in with a large flock of geese. I could hear them honking as they were coming across the field and the noise kept getting louder and closer when suddenly they appeared out the fog at about 5 feet off the ground and coming right at me as they were coming in for a landing. They were only about 15 or 20 feet away when they appeared out of the fog so there really wasn't much else I could do but just duck down really quick and cover up and hope they veered off, which luckily they did at the last moment. They were so close as they went by that I actually felt the wind from the wings. lol
The first picture is the days finds. The large Scraper is in the middle and the two Thumbscrapers are on either side of it. The Spokeshave is on the top right and the top left is another small Scraper and the two Bifurcate bases are on the bottom along with another base I found. The second picture is of the two Bifurcate bases.
